Mobile Broadband Adoption Drives Chile's Market Growth During Next Five Years

The Chilean telecommunications market will grow at a CAGR of 6.6 percent over the next five years for a total of $6.4 billion in 2014, mainly due to the increasing penetration of mobile services and the adoption of mobile Internet services including data cards and mobile browsing, according to a new report from Pyramid Research.

In Chile, as in other mature markets, data services are gaining relevance in the overall picture and will be key factor for growth in the market, notes Derek Medlin, Senior Analyst at Pyramid Research and co-author of the report. "Data will grow to represent 36 percent of total market in 2014 from 22 percent in 2009," he adds. The report found availability of mobile data plans and the widespread availability of triple-play bundles, pushed by all fixed operators, will drive mobile and fixed broadband uptake.

"We anticipate that mobile data revenue will represent nearly 35 percent of total mobile revenue by 2014, from 12 percent in 2008, as a result of increasing adoption of mobile broadband connectivity solutions such as datacards and browsing services and the higher usage of infotainment services which include services such as ringtones, games, music, and video," continues Medlin.
