During the period from April 10 and June 10, 8, 729, 199 mobile phone users have registered successfully their telephone number in the National Register of Mobile Phone Users (RENAUT).

Mobile phone users either send a text message with their personal details, or can visit a retailer to register their details.

All phones have to be registered by April 2010, after which unregistered phones will be cut-off. In other countries that have mandated registration of ID, when the cut-off date arrived, on average around five percent of the recorded user base are disconnected. Most of these are people with multiple SIMs who decide not to register the secondary accounts.

Plans for the database were approved by Mexico's Senate last September.

According to the Mobile World subscriber database, Mexico has just over 79 million mobile phone users
