Record High for Mobile Music Downloads in UK
The UK's mobile music market is continuing to exhibit strong growth with a record number of downloads for May (1.72 million), reports GfK. So far in 2009 each month has registered at least 1.5 million music downloads and the market is still growing at an impressive rate in volume terms (April and May 09 were 21% up on 08).
Whilst this is encouraging news for the industry, it should be noted that close to one third (31% in May 09) of MP3s downloaded were via a subscription service.
As the value of each individual track downloaded via a subscription is in theory free (but GfK allocate a nominal fee of 10p) the value is growing at a slower rate than the volume, although May also reached an all time high in value terms of £2.36 million
Subscriptions are encouraging 'search and discovery' as over 70,000 titles were downloaded just once in the month of May.
