WiMAX Coverage Expands in Malaysia

Malaysian WiMAX network operator, Packet One Networks says that it has expanded its network coverage to include arious areas across Ipoh, Kuantan, and Kuala Terengganu. The company has a target of covering 35% of the Malaysian population within a year.

"Expanding P1 W1MAX network coverage is one of our highest priorities and the expansion to these three states illustrates our commitment in ensuring that as many Malaysians as possible can have access to quality broadband with the flexibility, convenience and ease-of-use of wireless broadband at affordable prices," said Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer, P1.

Since the launch of P1 W1MAX in August 2008, apart from the areas mentioned today, the service is now available in many areas of the Klang Valley, and selected areas in Johor, Kedah and Penang.

The company also expects to launch its services in Sarawak by early next year.

"Sarawak grew its household broadband penetration from 9.7 percent in 2007 to 13.6 percent at the end of last year and aims to increase this further to 50 percent by 2010," Lai added.

Alcatel-Lucent is the primary provider of the WiMAX infrastructure, under a US$71 million contract which was announced in January last  year.

P1 is one of the four Malaysian WiMAX 2.3Ghz license-holders.
