Mobile Phone Sales Rise As Singaporeans Get Smart
April 2009 has seen sales of Mobile Phones in Singapore grow by an impressive 30% in value terms compared to one year ago, reports GfK. The research firm attributes to the introduction of more Smart Phone models with advanced features such as touch screens and higher-resolution built-in cameras.
The Smart Phone segment now accounts for almost 20% of the total handset market at current value. This has led to a huge increase in demand for these devices which previously catered largely to business users. Operators have also contributed to the boost in smartphone categories with high subsidies granted to handsets bundled with contracts.
The sale of Mobile Phones grew 15.6% to reach S$183 million in the first quarter of 2009. The market was driven mainly by the sale of low-end mobile phones and high-end Smart Phones.
