Azerbaijan Inches Closer to 3G License Awards
Azerbaijan's Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies is planning to distribute 3G radio frequencies by the end of 2009, reports the Azerbaijan Business Center. The Minister of Communications and Information Technologies, Ali Abbasov said all three of the GSM operators already applied to the Ministry for a license to offer 3G services.
"It is planned to distribute frequencies between these operators and start introducing the services till end-2009." Minister added.
The licenses were originally expected to have been released late last year, following the settling of unspecified technical problems, but nothing further was heard.
The Mobile World database notes that there are three GSM operators, along with one CDMA operator in the country. At the end of last year, there were just under 5.2 million subscribers in the country - representing a population penetration level of 64%.
