T-Mobile USA Investigating Confidential Data Theft Claims

T-Mobile USA is investigating claims that its computer systems have been compromised and that a copy of their customer database is being offered up for sale. On a note to the Full Disclosure security mailing list, an anonymous poster claimed that a wide range of T-Mobile data had been copied.

"We have everything, their databases, confidental documents, scripts and programs from their servers, financial documents up to 2009."

The hacker claimed to have offered the database to T-Mobile's competitors but they were not interested - although the hacker admitted that they probably contacted the wrong people.

In a statement e-mailed to Security Fix, T-Mobile said it was investigating the claims.

"The protection of our customers' information, and the safety and security of our systems, is absolutely paramount at T-Mobile," the company said. "Regarding the recent claim, we are fully investigating the matter. As is our standard practice, if there is any evidence that customer information has been compromised, we would inform those affected as soon as possible."

Some reports have suggested that elements of the data released on the posting look legitimate, but the mailing list is known for having a fairly high number of scam artists who pretend to have confidential data.

Last November, T-Mobile Germany's Managing Director, Philipp Humm had to resign following a data theft scandal where the company had admitted to losing the personal data belonging to its 17 million customers.
