China Mobile Planning $4.6 Billion 3G Spend in Shanghai
China Mobile plans to spend around RMB 31 billion (US$4.6 billion) on its 3G network in Shanghai by 2011, mainly as the city prepares for the World Expo 2010. The investment will create about 3,000 new jobs in the city during the period under a deal signed between China Mobile and the Shanghai government, according to a report in the Shanghai Daily.
The Expo will take place from May 1 – October 31, 2010, and aims to attract some 70 million visitors.
China Mobile started trials of its 3G service in April last year and it has attracted about 600,000 TD-SCDMA users. The China Mobile 3G network is unlikely to be compatible with foreign visitors who are more likely to roam onto Unicom's WCDMA, or Telecom's CDMA networks.
