Israel Consults on Possible 3G Spectrum Auction

Published on: 26th April 2009

Israel's Ministry of Communications is to hold a public consultation to decide how to allocate a batch of unused 3G radio spectrum. The move has been prompted by a request from MIRS Communications after it was earlier blocked from bidding for WiMAX licenses.

A report in local business newspaper, Globes noted that if no one else is interested in the spectrum, then a competitive auction would not be possible - making it difficult to award the license to MIRS under the current regulations.

If the license is not awarded, the option for an MVNO may be open to MIRS after the government recently relaxed the regulations to permit them in the country.

MIRS is a Motorola subsidiary and currently operates the country's only iDEN network.
