Caribbean Prepaid Mobile Yield in Minutes Rises 30%
Signals Telecom Consulting has issued a report on prepaid rates in the Caribbean which indicates that despite teledensity levels in excess of 100% in several Caribbean markets, the current tariff structure is not complex. Only nine of the 62 operators covered by the study reward high-value top-ups by means of bonuses on the credit amount.
Operators that have made changes to their offer include LIME Jamaica, GT&T (Guyana) and Digicel in the French West Indies. These operators are attempting to neutralize competitor Multi SIM strategies by launching flat rate plans.
"After Cuba, the Bahamas is the most attractive market in the region, with interest already having been shown by companies such as Digicel, LIME and AT&T from the United States. Analysis of the yield in minutes offered by the local mobile monopoly provider BTC Mobility (Batelco) shows that it is below the regional average. Nevertheless, it is higher than that of some markets open to competition included in this report, such as Aruba, the Cayman Islands and Curaçao. This scenario will force new entrants to implement more aggressive promotional strategies than those seen when markets began to be opened up in countries such as Jamaica, Barbados and Grenada," declared Jose F. Otero, President of Signals Telecom Consulting and co-author of the report.
