HTC to Appeal Against German Patent Ruling

Published on: 9th March 2009

Taiwan based handset manufacturer, HTC says that it will appeal against a German court ruling that it had infringed patents owned by holding firm, IP-com related to 3G radio technologies. The court, in the German city of Mannheim, ruled against HTC last Friday.

The court ruled that HTC products are infringing on the specified patent and subsequently granted an injunction pending IP-com raising a one million Euro security bond. Once effective, the injunction will prevent HTC from selling or importing its mobile devices into Germany.

The alleged infringing technology is present in the baseband chipset component supplied by HTC's chipset vendor and does not involve HTC technology or intellectual property. HTC said that it is working with its chipset supplier - understood to be Qualcomm - to identify an alternative solution and believes the court decision has limited impact on its financial results or sales activities.
