Thai Operator to Push Ahead with 3G Network Rollout

Published on: 23rd February 2009

Thailand's state owned operator, TOT has told the Reuters news agency that it will proceed with plans to deploy a 3G network, with a commercial launch due by the end of the year. The government has previously hinted that it will sell 3G auctions in the first half of this year.

The telecoms regulator has approved the company's plan to spend US$816 million on the network upgrade - which will involve around 500 base stations in the capital city, Bangkok and the surrounding areas which belong to its ACT Mobile subsidiary.

The firm is also understood to be trying to secure a deal with rival operator, Advanced Info Service (AIS) to lease its existing 3G network, which covers the capital city - but uses the 900Mhz spectrum.

Another operator, DTAC recently placed an order with Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei for the supply of 3G infrastruture.

Last October, Qualcomm's Thailand country manager, Kaneungjit Suriyathumrongkul warned that Thailand will need at least three 3G networks to ensure sufficient competition in the market. Ms Suriyathumrongkul also noted at the time that MVNOs were an option for the country, but only if the underlying network is good and expressed concerns with the idea of a shared national network.
