Ubiquisys and Mobica Announce Femtocell Podcast Sync
3G femtocell vendor, Ubiquisys has announced the release of a femtocell-powered podcast application. Software supplied by Mobica enables phones to automatically download the latest podcasts when entering the home zone, taking advantage of extremely fast low-cost 3G bandwidth delivered by the femtocell.
The process is totally automatic - simply by arriving home, users get the latest podcasts to enjoy anywhere, without pressing any buttons on their phone. Podcast subscriptions are initially selected via a podcast aggregator website such as PodNova.
Mobica's application is one of the first to use Ubiquisys APIs that provide internet and handset applications access to presence information via a femtocell intelligence server.
Created to meet the requirements of a mobile operator, Podcast Sync is also a first from the handset application perspective: it is the first application to use Mobica's Generic Connection Framework. This gives mobile operators complete freedom to choose the media content type and source that can be delivered via the femtocell, helping to drive ARPU and user stickiness.
"Beyond providing additional network coverage and capacity, femtocells also provide operators with an exciting new platform for revenue generating services," said Chris Gilbert, CEO of Ubiquisys. "This announcement with Mobica represents the first of many applications and services set to be announced as operators begin to announce the launch of consumer services."
