Published on: 8th February 2009
Vodafone has announced that the CEO of its Indian subsidiary, Asim Ghosh is to retire in March - and named Marten Pieters as his replacement. Ghosh will however continue as a non-executive member on the board of Vodafone Essar.
Ghosh had joined the firm in 1998 when it was a single-circle operator under the Max Touch brand. The firm is now present in 21 out of 22 circles in the country and is now the company is India's third-largest telecom operator after Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications and has over 63 million subscribers.
"We started on a ride in Mumbai in 1998. We never realised then what a roller coaster it would be. Over 10 years later today, serving tens of millions of subscribers, with a fabulous team, a great brand, a company with a great future, it's been a ride I wouldn't exchange for anything else! With Marten, the company will be in great hands," Mr Ghosh said in a statement.
Marten Pieters is the former CEO of Celtel International, a GSM operator operating in Africa, now owned by Zain, and currently a director of Luxembourg-based Millicom International Cellular
Vodafone group CEO Vittoria Colao said: "I want to take this opportunity to thank Asim Ghosh for his extraordinary stewardship of the company, from small beginnings to the leading position it enjoys today. We are very pleased that Asim will continue his association with Vodafone Essar. The board will continue to benefit from his contribution and I personally will continue to seek his advice and counsel."
