More Rumours of a Dell Smartphone
Published on: 14th January 2009
The on-off rumours that Dell Computers is planning an entry into the mobile phone market have resurfaced again - this time thanks to an analyst note from Shaw Wu, an analyst with Kaufman Bros.
"The exact timing of Dell's launch is not clear but our sources indicate it is closer to reality than before," wrote Wu, "We believe it is likely inevitable that Dell enter the cellphone space given the cannibalization of PCs by smartphones and highly functional mobile devices."
There is a lot of speculation that the handset - if it actually exists - would be shown off at next month's 3GSM event in Barcelona.
In February 2007, Dell Computers managed to recruit Motorola's President of Mobile Devices, Ron Garriques to head up a new Global Consumer division. At Motorola, Mr Garriques was largely responsible for the launch of the highly popular RAZR range of handsets.
There is speculation that a Dell smartphone could be based on the Android operating system - however, the firm has a long heritage with supporting Microsoft Windows and only last July, Dell teamed up with Microsoft to develop a range of 3G capable products for the Chinese TD-SCDMA standard. The core aspect of the cooperation relates to studying the compatibility of the Windows operating system with a 3G data card and Dell computers.
