Bullet Speed Wi-Fi Service for Japan

Japan's NTT Communications has announced plans to offer Wi-Fi service in the country's iconic Bullet Trains between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka - as they travel at speeds exceeding 270km per hour. Coverage will also include the waiting lounges of all 17 stations along the route, beginning in March 2009.

On-board service will be introduced progressively from March when Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), which operates the Tokaido Shinkansen, revises its timetable. Services at individual stations will be launched at varying times within the month.

JR Central has developed the onboard service in collaboration with NTT Broadband Platform, Inc. (NTTBP). The onboard WLAN will be connected to leaky coaxial (LCX) cable and then signals will be transmitted to devices installed along the tracks. Connection will be stable and the network will operate at a maximum speed of 2 Mbps.
