Nokia Siemens Wins Qatar Network Upgrade Contract

Nokia Siemens Networks says that it has won a US$61 million contract from Qatar Telecom (Qtel) to modernise its 2G and 3G networks. The upgrade will involve new radio access network (RAN) and consultancy work, along with some improvements to the core network.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also provide Qtel with NetAct Global Reporter for collecting, processing and visualizing network performance information, and NetAct Optimizer for enhancing service quality for Qtel customers and increasing efficiency of the optimization processes.

As is increasingly common with the infrastructure vendor, their statement is light on details.

Qtel is the incumbent operator, although Vodafone is also about to launch a network in the country. According to figures from the Mobile World, Qtel ended the first half of this year with 1.4 million customers, of which an estimated 330,000 were already using the 3G network.
