Orange UK has suspended sales of the BlackBerry Bold smartphone, citing software problems in the handset. Orange has previously had problems with some Nokia handsets when its own software conflicted with the built-in Nokia OS, and it is not clear at the moment if the problem is down to the BlackBerry OS, or integrating it with the Orange network.
An internal memo sent to Orange staff and leaked to the Mobile Tech Addicts website read: “Following reports of software issues with the BlackBerry Bold handset across a variety of mobile operators, Orange has decided to act in the interest of its customers by suspending shipments of the device in the UK. We are currently awaiting feed back from RIM as to when an industry wide fix for these issues will be in place, and expect this suspension to be an interim measure."
Vodafone UK has continued to sell the phone - in addition to its exclusive rights to the new touch-screen "Storm" handset.
Announced in May, the Bold is a 3G smart phone that updates the basic BlackBerry design with a sharper screen and improved Web browser. The device has launched in several markets across the globe, and made its North American debut last month in Canada. In the USA, AT&T has also reportedly refused to carry the Bold phone due to problems with the software.
