SR Telecom Wins Cameroon WiMAX Supply Contract

SR Telecom has announced that it is to provide Canada-based Airtel Telecom Group (ATG) with symmetryMXTM solutions for wireless services in Central and Western Africa. This purchase will support the deployment of one hundred base stations throughout Cameroon, and the rollout is expected to begin in December, 2008 with a targeted completion of July, 2009.

Airtel Telecom Group's President and CEO, Mr Jamal Boukouray, said it expects WiMAX services to be available to 20 per cent of the targeted population by the end of 2009. The government also expects that 50 per cent of the Cameroon population will have broadband access by 2012, and WiMAX is seen as the principal enabler.

"We are very impressed with the performance, flexibility, and capacity of SR Telecom's symmetryMXTM solution, and are confident and enthusiastic about building a fruitful partnership with SR Telecom as we pursue aggressive network expansion to establish our service footprint in Cameroon," said Francois Draper, President of ATG Holdings.

SR Telecom is part of Groupe Lagasse, a Canadian holding company specializing in telecommunications development, manufacturing and supply.

No financial details were provided.

ATG has entered into a joint venture with Cameroon Telecom to deploy the WiMAX network and has committed to spend US$35 million over two years on the joint network.
