ZTE Shows of EDGE/TD-SCDMA Mobile Phone

China's ZTE has shown off the world's first EDGE TD SCDMA mobile handset. The U990 is ZTE's third high end TD SCDMA mobile handset model and will soon be available on the market. The two other previous models were the U980 and U981.

The new U990 has a high-speed transmission rate of up to 2.8 Mbps, the fastest transmission speed among the TD-SCDMA terminals available in the industry, and supports dual mode TD-SCDMA/EDGE allowing seamless transitions between the two networks.

The U990 handset runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system and is the first ZTE handset integrated with a Microsoft OS.

ZTE is the largest single supplier of TD-SCDMA based 3G phones to China Mobile for its 3G trials currently under way.
