Colombia's Mobile Telephony Revenues Will Pass S$ 7.1 Billion by 2013

Signals Telecom Consulting has published a report which takes a look at the mobile services market in Colombia with a focus on the VAS offering of local mobile operators.

"The deployment of UMTS/HSPA networks by Tigo and Movistar will invigorate the VAS offering and force Comcel to react to the commercial offerings rolled out by these operators. We expect 3G publicity campaigns to emphasize topics like coverage, service price, handset costs and the various multimedia applications made available via these new networks. In the near term, wireless mobile broadband accesses will generate the greatest amount of UMTS/HSPA network revenues. This will increase the level of competition for alternative connection methods such as WiMAX," comments Jose F. Otero, President of Signals Telecom Consulting and report author.

The upcoming IMT-2000 spectrum bidding will allow Avantel to establish itself as the fourth mobile operator in Colombia. "Sooner or later, Avantel will have to lay out its post-iDEN technological migration strategy. Beyond increasing its possibilities for attracting a potential buyer, the launch of a 3G network by this operator will mean the advent of a mobile player that is focused on the corporate and high consumption segment, specializing in the offering of value added services. This would make its offering more attractive in the local marketplace. In the middle term, however, it is highly unlikely that the Avantel 3G network will emulate coverage offered by Movistar or Comcel," concludes Jose F. Otero.
