Azerbaijan Operator Expands GSM Coverage
Azerbaijan based mobile operator, Azercell says that it has expanded its network coverage with the installation of twenty new base stations during August. Among its total amount, 6 stations are installed in Baku, 1 in Absheron, the rest are installed in Astara, Imyshly, Lerik, Gabala, Gobustan, Guba, Terter, Tovuz, Ujar and Zagatala regions.
Azercell has now installed 2 Home Location Registers, 15 Base Stations Controller Systems, 16 Mobile Services Switching Centers and 1473 radio base stations.
Figures from the Mobile World database report that Azercell ended Q1 2008 with some 3.2 million customers and a market share of just under 64%. The country itself has a population penetration level estimated at around 62%.
Azercell Telecom was established on January 19, 1996. It is 51.3% owned by Fintur (58% owned by TeliaSonera, 42% by Turkcell) and 48.7% is held by Turkey based Cenay Inshaat.
