UK Selling 27,000 Apple IPhone's Per Week

The 3G iPhone is achieving a market share in the UK handset market of between 4-6%, despite still being exclusive to just one mobile operator in the country. Sources told the UK trade magazine, Mobile Today that the company is stilling around 27,000 iPhone's per week - although that is down on the 50,000 per week sold when the handset was initially launched.

The trade magazine suggested though that O2 is putting a lot of pressure on sales and ordering large quantities of handsets in order to try and retain its UK exclusivity for Apple phones.

The company recently became the first operator to offer the iPhone on prepay tariffs - and is hoping for a Christmas sales boost when the model goes on sale next week.

The source added: "Prepay will undoubtedly give it a lift, but how much is difficult to say in the Christmas run-up. Will people want to spend so much in the current market conditions?"
