Malaysian Minister Calls for Less Youth Text Messaging

Malaysia's Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Jahid Jahid has called on the country's youth to cut back on "aimless" text messages and engage in more "meaningful" activities. Describing text messaging as a waste of time and money, he said they must bear in mind the high cost of living stemming from the increase in the prices of goods and fuel.

He was speaking at the closing of the State-level Youth Month and Day rally, which involved some 5,000 youths from around Sabah in East Malaysia.

Instead of idling away their time indulging in SMSes, they should consider taking part in sporting and other social activities that would be more meaningful towards improving their lifestyle, he added.

Minister Jahid is currently a member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA), having won the seat in 10th State General Elections held in 2004.
