Microsoft and Dell to Support Chinese 3G Standard
Published on: 31st July 2008
Microsoft and computer manufacturer, Dell have teamed up with China's Datang Mobile to develop a range of products based on the Chinese 3G standard, TD-SCDMA. The core aspect of the cooperation relates to studying the compatibility of the Windows operating system with a 3G data card and Dell computers.
"The partnership with Microsoft will benefit the TD-SCDMA development on the technology and marketing side, which would further promote TD-SCDMA handsets for commercial use and expand globally," said Datang chairman Zhen Caiji.
Datang Mobile will collaborate with Dell China on the bundled sale of Dell's laptop computers and Datang Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G mobile data card. Several models of Dell computers will come with the 3G cards built in, although no timescales was offered.
Earlier this month, the TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance forcast substantial penetration of the TD-SCDMA standard in the China market with penetration expected to hit a minimum of 14% in 2008.
China Mobile is widely expected to be required to build a nationwide TD-SCDMA when it is eventually awarded a 3G license. Trials of the network are already underway though in eight cities - consisting of some 18,000 base stations.
