Australian Bomb Detonated by Mobile Phone Claim

It has been alleged that a home made bomb which killed an Australian scientist, Dr Lionel Lowe earlier this year was triggered by a mobile phone command. In a court hearing, it was alleged that fitter machinist Ashley Wright, 26 had constructed the bomb - although a motive has not been provided.

Dr Lionel Lowe, 67, was a champion shooter and collector of guns, explosive material and detonators.

Police allege that Dr Lowe died when he was hit by shrapnel from a pipe bomb placed in a bin in the backyard of his home on May 19th this year.

The police say that Ashley Wright has admitted to making the bomb - and the circuit board used to trigger the bomb. He claims that was asked by Dr Lowe's son, Jonathan to make the circuit board, saying that he had been told it was to be used in a mobile phone-activated home alarm system. They also claim that Jonathan had asked Ashley Wright to make the bomb, which was to be detonated in a remote location.

Jonathan Lowe has been questioned by the police but denied all knowledge of the explosives or related items - and has not been charged in relation to the murder.

The bomb itself is claimed to be similar in design to those used in London in the terrorist attacks in 2005, although there not thought to be a terrorist link to this explosion.

The court case has been adjourned until September.
