Last week, Dumfries and Galloway Police carried out an operation to tackle the illegal use of mobile phones by drivers in their part of the UK. Over this week long period, 48 drivers were caught and issued with fixed penalty tickets.
Of these 48, 30 of them were being made during the course of the driver’s employment, and 23 were the drivers of large goods vehicles.
Constable Andrew Stevenson of the force’s Mobile Support Group says “I am astonished that people still find it acceptable to use a hand held mobile phone whilst driving, and am particularly shocked in relation to the number of drivers of large goods vehicles caught doing this. The force will continue to report all offenders caught carrying out this dangerous practice”.
The UK banned driving while using a mobile phone without a hands-free kit back in December 2003.
