Cyprus Plans Ban on Mobile Phones in Schools

New legislation being planed by the Cypriot government would ban school pupils from taking their mobile phone into schools. Under the proposed law, students carrying a mobile phone into school would be censured - and those who carry a phone that is switched on could face suspension from school.

Anyone using a mobile phone as a video camera would face expulsion - in a move to try and cut down on so called "happy slapping" incidents where pupils video bullying incidents and then share the clip with friends.

The government has not ruled out installing phone jamming equipment inside school buildings if necessary.

A ban on carrying phones into schools in New York City resulted in an unexpected financial bonus for retailers near the schools, as they set up lockers in their shops to securely store mobile phones during the school day - for a fee.
