Huawei Wins Malaysian WiMAX Contract

Malaysian WiMAX license holder, Asiaspace has awarded Huawei Technologies with a contract to supply the company with an end-to-end WiMAX solution. Asiaspace, known for its capability of building telecommunication towers for mobile operators throughout Malaysia aims to provide 40 per cent of the Malaysian population with Internet broadband access through its WiMAX service by 2010.

"I am pleased to pick Huawei as our WiMAX equipment supplier. Huawei has exhibited total commitment to the project throughout our selection process, and the company has proven itself to be one of the leaders in this fast-developing technology," said Asiaspace chairman, Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdullah.

He said that Asiaspace was impressed with Huawei's localized engineering and delivery capability and this was one of the main reasons why the company has been contracted to design and install a network including base stations, gateways and management systems for Asiaspace.

"We plan to spend about RM500 million over the next three to five years to roll out our wireless broadband service. We hope to become Malaysia's top WiMAX player by 2012 in terms of revenue and number of subscribers," Abdul Ghani said.

The company is all set to roll out its service in the third quarter of this year with the target of covering 25 per cent of the population in Peninsular Malaysia by year-end. This will then be increased to 30 per cent in the following year before hitting 40 per cent in 2010.

"The rollout will start in the Klang Valley and expanded to major cities, urban and suburban areas to the north and south of the West Coast of the peninsula. We will be covering the East Coast next year," Abdul Ghani said.
