Afghanistan based Roshan says that it has reached 2 million active subscribers. The firm, which began operations in July 2003, as the second GSM provider in Afghanistan, before any basic telecommunications infrastructure was established, is now present in over 224 cities and towns and in 33 of 34 provinces, covering almost 56% of the population. The company says that it has invested over US$338 million on building out its network.
“This is not an achievement for Roshan, it is an achievement for the nation and for the people of Afghanistan, because it marks how much progress has been made in the reconstruction and rebuilding of the Afghan economy. We will continue to invest in the communities in which we operate and in providing opportunities for a better future and education in order to build human potential and capacity and improve the lives of Afghanistan’s people,” said Altaf Ladak, chief operating officer, Roshan. “The support and trust of Roshan customers has played a pivotal role in growing the Roshan family of active subscribers to 2 million.”
Afghan singer, Farhad Darya will inaugurate the 2 million active subscriber celebrations and will announce his sponsorship agreement with Roshan as the firm’s new brand ambassador.
“Our mission at Roshan is to connect the people of Afghanistan to each other and to the world. Two million is a very good start and we are committed to extending the benefits of wireless technology to millions more in the years to come,” commented Ladak.
