Alcatel-Lucent Wins Nigerian Network Expansion Contract

Alcatel-Lucent has signed a contract with Globacom (Glo), NigeriaÃ's second largest national operator to extend the network capacity and performance of GlobacomÃ's mobile and fixed networks. The project will enable Globacom to increase its mobile network capacity (including GSM/EDGE and W-CDMA/HSPA technologies) to support up to 35 million subscribers, and to raise its fixed network capacity.

The network expansion covers radio access, Mobile NGN core network and microwave transmission, IP/MPLS and optical networking, fixed access networks, intelligent networks and valued-added services, next-generation networks, as well as OSS/Billing.

"We are committed to offer our nation an unparalleled user experience through the use of first class telecommunication products and solutions," said Globacom Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga. "Delivering the highest quality services to end-users is our top priority. With Alcatel-Lucent's advanced mobile and fixed network solutions, we will increase our network capacity and provide the best services to meet the rapidly increasing demand from our customers."

No financial details were provided. 

Estimates from the Mobile World database find that Globacom ended last year with just over 11.8 million mobile subscribers - representing a market share of 29.3%.
