China Mobile's Shanghai branch has said it will install over 3,000 TD-SCDMA base stations in Shanghai this year as it prepares to launch 3G services commercially. The company is already running trials of the network and handsets, although there have been complaints about coverage from the network and battery life in the handsets.
The trial TD-SCDMA network only covers Shanghai's downtown area. "Therefore, we need more base stations to expand TD-SCDMA network's coverage," an insider at China Mobile's Shanghai branch told the official China Daily newspaper. The company currently has around 6,000 GSM base stations in the city.
A company spokesman said that the company aims to build multiple overlays of technology platforms, and would include Wi-Fi and HSPA services in its portfolio.
According to CCID Consulting, information from retailers and manufacturers show that some 2,000 3G terminals were sold in ten days when the TD-SCDMA trials started in eight cities. Domestic manufacturers accounted for 60% of sales of handsets. ZTE sold 495 of its U980 device (26.8% of total sales), followed by Samsung with 20.8%; LG with 19.1%; Lenovo with 12.6%, Hisense with 12.6% and New Postcom with 8.2%.
