U Mobile Launches 3G Services in Malaysia

Malaysian greenfield 3G operator, U Mobile has launched its postpaid service - dubbed the U38 Plan - in the Klang Valley, whilst also throwing in a two month trial of its HSPA service.

“The U38 Plan is targeted squarely at the new 3G user who wants an uncomplicated, affordable, performance-driven postpaid plan with all the essentials thrown in. The typical U38 Plan user is a highly mobile individual who is discovering the growing dependency of a mobile service with a primary broadband functionality. That is why we’ve bundled in U Mobile’s high-speed mobile internet together with this innovative plan,” said Yun Hae Jong, Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile Sdn Bhd.

The U38 Plan will be available to the public on 18 April onwards at the U Mobile store located at the ground floor, Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur and at selected mobile phone dealers and distributors throughout the Klang Valley.

The Mobile World report on Malaysia notes that the country ended last year with some 23.3 million subscribers, representing a population penetration level of 93%. Of the subscriber base, just under 1.6 million are using 3G services.

U Mobile was founded in 1998 as MiTV Networks. U Mobile is a wholly owned subsidiary of U Television which was formerly known as U Telecom Media Holdings and MiTV Corporation.
