Chinese Firm to Start Manufacturing Low-Cost CDMA Phones in Egypt

China's TechFaith Wireless has announced signing a collaboration agreement with QuickTel to develop and manufacture low-cost mobile handsets in Egypt. Expanding on QuickTel's existing manufacturing facilities, the handsets will be manufactured based on technology from Qualcomm.

Mr. Defu Dong, CEO of TechFaith, said, "We are excited about our collaboration with QuickTel, as we believe that demand for mobile solutions in the MEA region will continue to remain robust. We have already made significant progress in expanding into the African market by providing tailor made middle to high-end CDMA handsets to local operators. Our R&D capabilities, rich experience in developing products based on CDMA technology, and our ability to provide an overall enriched user experience to customers will complement QuickTel's strong local presence, and enable us to further capitalize on the potential in the MEA region."

"Wireless communications in the MEA region are poised for tremendous growth in the coming years, thanks largely to bold innovators who are launching exciting new services and introducing low-cost handsets based on CDMA," said Pertti Johansson, President of Qualcomm Middle East and Africa. "This agreement between QuickTel and TechFaith will give regional operators new options for supporting the broadest possible customer base."

QuickTel was originally established in 1959 as part of the Egyptian Telephone Company and was privatized in 1999. Currently, the company has more than 1000 employees, and is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.
