Brazil - GSM Subscriber Base Passes 100 Million
The total number of mobile connections in Brazil reached 124.12m at the end of February, according to figures released by Brazilian regulator Anatel. The analogue and CDMA totals continued to decline, losing over 1m customer between them, while GSM added 2.31m customers. The net gain was 1.26m. Although this was the lowest figure in ten months, it was over double the 0.47m net additions recorded in February 2006.
Moreover, given the extraordinary result of 4.67m new connections in December, January and FebruaryĆ's figures have both been excellent and have belied any notion of a post-Christmas fall-out.
GSM connections broke through the 100m barrier in February, hitting 100.21m at the end of the month, while CDMA was down to 19.39m. The number of prepaid customers also went through the 100m mark to reach 100.38m. With prepaid growth outpacing contract growth in each of the past three months, customer quality fell to 19.1% at the end of February, the lowest level for over two years.
