India's Interconnection Congestion Declines Again

A report from India's telecoms regulator has found that congestion on the country's mobile networks is continuing to decline - indicating that the network operators are improving their networks even faster than they are adding new subscribers.

The TRAI reported that the number of POIs (points of interconnection) with congestion has fallen to 315 during the three-month period ended December 2007, compared with 348 during the same period ended September 2007.

The POI is the interconnection point where calls are handed over to other operators.

Although the overall level of congestion has declined - the number of POIs which reported congestion levels of under 40% has barely budged as all the focus seemed to have been on the worst areas affected,

Among the private service providers, Reliance Communications has the largest number of POIs with congestion last December,(134 POIs) followed by Bharti Airtel (57 POIs), Dishnet (36 POIs), Vodafone (27 POIs) and Tata Teleservices (22 POIs).
