One Company Accused of Sending 80% of Chinese Spam SMS

Some eighty percent of SMS spam in China is sent by just one company reports the Beijing Morning Post citing China Central Television's (CCTV) televised World Consumer Day ceremony. Focus Wireless, a subsidiary of US listed Focus Media has acquired several small companies in preparation for a separate stock listing and the loosely controlled subsidiaries may be responsible for the spam, explained Focus Wireless vice president Ji Hairong.

According to Nanfang Metropolis News, Focus Wireless' Zhengzhou subsidiary sends out 200 million SMS every single day - while several other company subsidiaries send out upwards of 30 million SMS per day.

Focus Wireless has been reported to have had its operating license revoked by the regulator, although Ji Hairong denied this.

In March 2006, Focus Media entered the Chinese market after it acquired Dotad Media Holdings for US$30 million in cash and stock. The company reported revenues of US$14 million in Q3 2007 - a 400 percent rise since the purchase.

The company is due to report its full year results on Wednesday.
