North Korea and China Discuss Radio Frequency Management

Talks have been held between representatives of China and North Korea to resolve problems about radio frequency use along their shared borders. These were the first talks since an agreement on FM radio frequencies in 1999.

According to China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the two sides signed new agreements on the control of mobile phone frequencies, without going into details. It has been known that for some years that Chinese GSM signals have an unusually strong signal strength along the border which leaks into North Korea for some distance. Since the agreement to grant Orascom Telecom a commercial GSM license in North Korea, such issues would need to be ironed out.

The delegation also formed a joint committee to regulate the spectrum in the 30-3000 MHz bands.
