Indonesian CDMA Operator Passes 3 Million Subscriber Mark

Indonesian CDMA operator Mobile-8 Telekom has ended 2007 with just over 3m customers, as the number of connections rose by 65% year on year. Mobile-8 launched just over four years ago in December 2003 and has since built a market share of just over 3% in Indonesia, where it competes with three giant operators in the shape of Telkomsel, Satelindo and Excelcomindo, as well as new entrant Hutch and two minor players.

Mobile-8: Customers, EOP (m), Q3 03 - Q4 07

Q4 2007 was the best quarter in the operator's history, as it added over 0.5m new customers taking its total net additions for the second half to over 0.75m, after 0.33m in the first half.

Coverage has been a key factor in the company's expansion, as the number of base stations in service increased from 400 to 1,000 during the course of 2007, which in turn allowed the launch of operations in Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Bali in addition to the existing business in Java.

Preliminary revenue results from Mobile-8 show the increase in the size of the customer base to have yielded a 50% year on year increase in gross revenues, although no absolute figures have yet been given.
