The Southern Sudan state of Lakes (Al Buhayrat) is expected to get mobile phone and internet coverage soon after local internet firm M-Marsat Mobile announced plans to cover the state. Network infrastructure is already being deployed and testing of the service has commenced.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, the Lakes State Minister of Information and Communication, Adak Costa Mapuor said that there is need for the people of Lakes State to have access to the modern communication and information systems:
Minister Adak further said that the company will also extend the service as far as to the rural areas.
She pointed out the mobile telephone network MTN is also constructing a tower in the state capital, Rumbek and should launch coverage in the near future. MTN is the second largest phone operator in the country, with nearly 1.9 million customers according to the Mobile World database. The company also has over 100,000 3G subscribers. The market leader is Zain - formerly the Sudanese Mobile Telephone Co.
Lakes is one of the 26 wilayat or states of Sudan. It has an area of 40,235 km² and an estimated population of approximately 350,000 (2000).
