Vodafone NZ Claims Half of All New Music Single Sales
Vodafone New Zealand says that its mobile music download service was responsible for half of all single track sales in the country during December. The company's head of music, Morgan Donoghue, told Stuff newspaper that Vodafone's sales of single tracks for December reached 106,000. The company's sales of full albums are said to be in the "hundreds per month". Vodafone has been prominent in promoting music awards in the country, which has undoubtedly assisted in promoting its own music download service.
The newspaper said that it was unable to verify the claim by Vodafone, and the local record association, Rianz refused to comment. The association started to include digital music sales in its weekly sales charts last May. Speaking at the launch of the new music chart, RIANZ president Adam Holt did note that "Urban, RnB and Hip Hop tracks have made some big jumps on this week's sales chart and that is clearly driven by digital sales, especially in the mobile phone platforms where that music is very strong."
While Vodafone claims to be selling half of all paid downloads - that does not then include any illegal downloads which are also occurring.
