Govt: Chimirri Won't Return to Hondutel

The scandal-ridden head of Honduran state-owned telco Hondutel Marcelo Chimirri will not return to his position, the government declared on Wednesday, as reported by local newspaper La Prensa.

Chimirri has been absent from his position at Hondutel since the state began an investigation into suspected collusion by the company's management in cases of phone tapping in early November.

This month, Honduran President Manuel Zelaya temporarily placed his economy minister Jorge Rosa at the helm of state telco.

"I want to say that from January 2, 2008, there will be a new CEO at Hondutel... Chimirri will not return to Hondutel," Raúl Valladares, private secretary to the presidency, was reported as saying.
