Malaysia's Celcom Expects Strong 3G Subscriber Growth
Malaysia's Celcom is reportedly expecting a sharp rise in 3G subscribers following moves to boost its mobile web content range. However, senior vice-president of marketing Zalman Zainal Abidin declined to reveal the exact figures for their growth projection.
Celcom had earlier told the Business Times newspaper that it aims to have 450,000 3G customers by the end of the year.
"As you can see right now, Celcom is already in partnership with companies such as Merchantrade, RedTone and TuneTalk by providing them with our mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) platform.
"We are open to any proposals from potential partners who are interested in using our network capabilities to come up with new and exciting contents," he told reporters after the launch of Red FM's customised radio content on KL Monorail via Celcom's 3G technology, in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.
According to figures from the Mobile World database, Celcom ended the first half of this year with some 6.4 million subscribers, of which 267,000 were estimated to be using the 3G network.
