Open Mobile Terminal Group Gets a Bit More Open

The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) says that it has opened its product profile conformance process to everyone who is interested. Previously, only paid up members of the group could access the test cases. From now on, any organisation can check its products (including applications) against OMTP requirements and make declarations of compliance. This means that application developers and any vendor of devices or service platforms can demonstrate their compliance with the corresponding requirements from the operator community.

Following the OMTP's recent announcement on Recommended Practice for Connected Applications, the product profile compliance scheme has already being used by organisations in the connected applications and device management areas to test for compliancy. Organisations offering applications and services in the fixed internet world should make the OMTP website their first stop if they want benefit from the OMTP member experiences documented in Recommended Practices for Connected Applications and kickstart their presence in mobile.

Tim Raby, Managing Director of OMTP said, "We are delighted with the success of the initial product profile process and are enthused that we're now able to offer this to the entire industry. The organisations utilising the service can highlight their products and applications to the OMTP operator members, which in turn enables the operator industry to select applications that suitably fit their devices and networks. Compliant applications drive the market forward and enforce the message of the OMTP to enhance the consumer experience."

Mike Whittingham, VP Ecosystem Development, Symbian said "Symbian actively contributed to the OMTP Recommended Practices for Connected Applications document with the ultimate aim of helping to spread third party connected application development best practice. The new compliance process means companies from the developer community can acknowledge they have reflected documented best practice and then concentrate on promoting the innovative and compelling features of their application"
