Telcel, Nextel Sign Mobile Interconnection Deal

Published on: 5th December 2007

Mexico's largest mobile operator Telcel, a unit of Amƒ©rica Mƒ³vil, has signed a mobile to mobile interconnection agreement with Nextel Mexico, Nextel's parent company NII Holdings said in a statement.

Nextel has been battling for years to achieve interconnection with local mobile operators and despite previous orders from telecom regulator Cofetel, the company has to date only managed to interconnect SMS traffic.

Mobile operators have argued that Nextel must first obtain a traditional mobile license before they will interconnect.

Nextel sees the agreement with Telcel as a move towards achieving full recognition by all mobile carriers in Mexico.

"Nextel Mexico believes that achieving that recognition will position it to offer additional services to its customers such as calling party pays rate plans," the statement said.

The company is continuing its efforts towards reaching similar agreements with other carriers in Mexico, it said.
