CEO: Claro to Take Part in 3G Auction

Brazil's third placed mobile operator Claro plans to participate in upcoming auctions for 3G spectrum despite already having launched the service in the 850MHz band, local news service Agência Estado reported Claro CEO João Cox as saying.

The government is scheduled to award 3G spectrum in the 1.9-2.1GHz range on December 18.

Claro's 850MHz 3G operation, launched earlier this month, targets the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, BrasÃlia and Porto Alegre, and the operator, a unit of Mexico's América Móvil, plans to bid for additional spectrum to expand the service.

According to recent data from telecoms regulator Anatel, Claro ended October with a market share of 24.89% compared to 24.82% in September.
