Digitel Negotiates for 2100MHz Spectrum

Published on: 3rd December 2007

Venezuelan mobile operator Digitel has asked the telecoms regulator Conatel to award it spectrum in the 2100MHz band, rather than the 1800MHz band offered previously, local press reported.

Conatel had originally reserved the 2100 MHz band for other projects, but could change its mind given the potential for Digitel to contribute to competition.

"We do intend to grant new spectrum to Digitel to develop healthy competition," the nation's telecommunications and IT minister Jesse Chacƒ³n confirmed, according to the report.

In fact, new spectrum for Digitel must be something of a priority since Conatel recently granted 30MHz spectrum blocks in the 1900MHz band to market leaders Movilnet and Movistar.

Digitel is taking advantage of the talks to seek additional 900MHz spectrum, as well as new spectrum in the 2100 MHz band, company president Oswaldo Cisneros was quoted as saying.

Digitel is the smallest of Venezuela's three mobile operators, with approximately 4mn subscribers.
