Brazilian PC and electronics manufacturer Semp Toshiba expects to invest US$50mn in opening a mobile phone plant in Manaus in Brazil's northwestern state of Amazonas, local news service Agência Estado reported.
The company, which is a joint venture between local electronics firm Semp and Japan's Toshiba, will focus on the production of TV-capable mobile devices.
Sales of the devices are expected to take off after the launch of digital TV broadcasting, scheduled to take place in São Paulo city on December 2. In June 2006, Brazil adopted the Japanese ISDB standard.
According to the report, Semp Toshiba expects to take a 10% share of the
Brazilian mobile phone market within three years. Future plans also include the
export of mobile devices.
