Nokia Loses Legal Battle with Qualcomm

A court in The Netherlands has dismissed a patent complaint by Nokia against Qualcomm, stating that the scope of the claims was too wide and exceeded the narrow patent applications. Nokia was also ordered to pay legal costs. A German court dismissed Nokia's case against Qualcomm last month on similar grounds.

"This is the second time in as many months that a court in Europe has rejected Nokia's attempts to have a declaration of exhaustion against Qualcomm's patents," Qualcomm said in an issued statement.

Nokia spokeswoman Anne Eckert said Nokia will review the ruling before deciding whether to appeal or not.

Nokia had been trying to argue that it should not have to pay royalties on the patents, as the payments were already made by Texas Instruments who manufacture the chips which rely on the Qualcomm patents.
