Hitachi Shows Brighter Mobile Phone Screens

Hitachi Displays has shown off a display screen for mobile phones which it says is about 1.4 times brighter than existing displays - without increasing power consumption. Hitachi says that the new IPS-Pro-Prollezza technology has evolved from IPS-Pro technology and samples of the new product will be shipped from January 2008, while mass production will commence in 2008.

Hitachi Displays has also developed a hybrid IPS LC with suppressed light reflection, which should make the screen easier to read in bright sunlight.

IPS technology is a TFT liquid crystal technology utilizing an In-Plane-Switching (horizontal electric field) method, which operates differently from TFT liquid crystal such as TN. The IPS technology was unveiled in 1995 and put to practical use in 1996 by Hitachi. Since then, it has evolved into Super-IPS and Advanced-Super IPS through to IPS-Pro.
